This is a beginning list of terms related to this unit. Definitions are from American NationÝ by Prentice Hall and the Macmillan Dictionary. Please add others to your list.

Abolition -act of ending something such as slavery

American Colonization Society-Group that wanted to set up a colony for African Americans in Africa.

American Tract Society-A benevolent group that had its headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts who did relief work in the South during Reconstruction.Ý They worked in Freedman's Village and helped with schools and churches along with others charitable organizations.

Black codes- a set of laws passed during the Reconstruction era that limited the rights of freedmen.

Bounties-payments to men who joined the army. Sometimes a portion of the bounty would be reserved for the family of the recruit.

Carpetbagger-a group of northern people who were important in the Southern Reconstruction period.

Civil war- a war between people of the same country

Civilians-people who are not in the military

Contraband fund: A portion of the salary of working freedmen was set aside in the Contraband fund that was designed to administer to the needs of the contrabands.

Discrimination- polity that denies equality to certain people

draft- The draft required all males between the ages of 18 and 45 years old to serve in the military during the Civil War. This draft law also allowed a man to avoid going into the service by paying $300.00 to the government or by hiring someone else to serve in his place. Some people felt this was a "rich man's war" and a "poor man's fight".

Emancipate-to set free

Emancipation Proclamation- a declaration issued by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 that freed the slaves in the Confederacy.

Freedman- a freed slave

Freedmen's villages- camps set up to house freed slaves during the Civil War.

Grandfather clause-laws passed in the Reconstruction years in the South. It stated that if your grandfather voted then you didn't have to pass a literacy test or pay a "poll" tax. It had the effect of keeping many African-Americans from voting.

Freedmen's Bureau- nickname for the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands. It was an agency that was designed to provide relief and assistance to freedmen, refugees and also with the administration the lands that were confiscated during the war. Some say the most effective work the Freedman's Bureau accomplished was in the area of education. One of the responsibilities of this new bureau was to provide food, fuel, and clothing to needy white refugees and freedmen. It also provided school buildings, housing and rations for teachers so that they could carry out their work of instructing both the children and adults who flocked to the classroom. In addition it was charged with regulating the freedmen's labor.

Ku Klux Klan- a terrorist group that was started during the Reconstruction years by several Confederate veterans. Members of this group terrorized the freedpeople of color, their supporters and others. It still exists today.

Poll tax-money required before a voter can cast his ballot.

Reconstruction-the period of rebuilding that began during the Civil War and ended in the year 1877.

Republican Party- a political party that was created in the year 1854 by a group made up of Free-Soilers, northern democrats and anti-slavery Whigs.

Scalawags-people from the South who worked with the Republican Party. A negative term. They were considered traitors by many southerners.

Segregation-separation by race

Sharecropper-a farmer who works the land owned by someone else. In return the farmer gives the landowner a share of the crop at harvest time. Many poor Southerners were caught in a cycle of poverty because of this practice.
