She came from a wealthy family and married her distant cousin, Robert E. Lee. She was interested in many facets of her husband’s military career. She spent most of her time trying to educate herself in the political ways of the time. Following in her mother’s footsteps, she taught slaves how to read and write. She wanted them to be able to be self-sufficient should they ever be released from slavery. Her house, with Robert E. Lee still stands in Arlington Cemetery. She adored Arlington and was heartbroken when she had to leave it during the war. She remains one of the most influential women of her time and the lesson plan that follows highlights her important contributions. (photo from : www.leesboyhoodhome.com) |
