World War II: How did the US get involved and What were the effects?

Introduction

Introduction

On December 7, 1941 after months of unofficial involvement, the United States is forced to enter World War II.  The Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor destroyed 18 ships, 200 aircraft, and killed 2,000 people.  One December 8th President Roosevelt addressed congress and described the attack as "a date which will live in infamy."  As the U.S. entered the war many changes occurred, for example the military began to racially integrate, and women went to work in war factories.  American involvement in World War II before and after the attack on Pearl Harbor had significant effects on minorities and women as the U.S. mobilized its economic, human, and military resources.  In this webquest you will explore the involvement of the U.S. in World War II and the effects of this involvement.

Task

Students will work in groups of four to gather information from books, primary documents, and on-line resources to research their topic.  Students may choose from The Life of Dr. Charles Drew, U.S. Involvement in W.W.II, or Effects of U.S. Involvement.  After researching the topic students will work together to prepare a PowerPoint timeline presentation.
